Caregiver ToolKit: Supporting Body Acceptance in Kids
Purpose of This Guide
Children begin forming beliefs about their bodies from a very young age, and early experiences strongly influence self-esteem, confidence, and body respect (Smolak, 2011; Ricciardelli & Yager, 2016).
The purpose of this toolkit is to equip parents and caregivers with practical, research-based strategies to:
Understand how children develop body image across different ages.
Promote body respect and function-focused thinking.
Model healthy attitudes about food and bodies.
Teach media literacy and critical thinking around appearance ideals.
Recognize early signs of body dissatisfaction and risk for disordered eating.
Apply interactive activities that foster confidence, resilience, and emotional regulation (Neumark-Sztainer et al., 2010).
This toolkit is designed to be a practical reference. Not a rulebook. Adapt strategies to your child’s age, personality, and developmental stage.
